Abstract
334,236. Turner, P. W. May 30, 1929. Coffins; lids.-A coffin &c. has the joint between the lid 2, Figs. 1 and 3, and body 1 formed by contacting bevelled surfaces 3, 4 and also by co-operating parts 6, 7 between which is compressed a yielding mass 8 such as rope &c. impregnated with a filling or bonding material such as cement &c. or one of the compositions described in Specification 272,142, [Class 95, Paints &c.]. The coffin &c. may be of wood, wood-pulp, fibre, sheet steel or stone and may be treated by the process described in Specification 271,912, [Class 95, Paints &c.]. Pressure may be applied for closing by levers, cams, screw mechanism, toggle gear, &c., or in the case of stone or other heavy coffins, the force of gravity may be utilized for this purpose. In Fig. 1 the coffin is of wood, and pressure is applied by toggle mechanism 5. In Fig. 3 the body and lid are of pressed sheet steel, and an angle iron stiffener 9 is provided for the lid, the construction being otherwise similar to that in Fig. 1.
