Abstract

333,478. Iseler, A. G. W. Nov. 25, 1929. Joint-making packing comprises a cover 1 surrounding an elastic core 2 and a lower closing- plate 4. The parts are curved in cross-section; the radius of curvature 6 of the part 1 is less than the radius of curvature of the part 4. The cover 1 is of copper, copper alloy, nickel, &c. The core 2 is made of asbestos, cotton, cork, leather &c., and has one or more layers, of wire cloth inserted therein to ensure the necessary degree of elasticity. When pressure is applied to the cover 1, the plate 4 is pressed down and presses the. sides 5 into an undercut portion of a dove-tailed groove 8 in the joint-plate 9. The packing may be made in the form of solid plates, or as rings of round, oval, or angular shape.
