Abstract

333,193. Allen, J. B. Feb. 5, 1929. Traversing-cutter apparatus.-A pa-per-trimming machine has a straight-edge 20 formed of a one-piece aluminium or other metal casting which is hollow and provided with stiffening ribs 21. A disc-cutter 41 is mounted in a member 37 which is pivoted at 38 to a carriage 35 sliding on the straight-edge in guides formed by grooves and a plate 26 which is either integral with or secured to the straight-edge. A projection 62 on the carriage presses the upper part of the cutter outwards, so that the lower part of the cutter remains in close contact with the straightedge. The member 37 is provided with a handle 39 normally elevated by a spring 42 and is connected to the carriage 35 by a slot 45 and pin 44. The spring 42, secured at 43, rests at one end on the pin 44, and at the other end is passed into a slot in the carriage, so that the forward end of the spring may frictionally grip the straight-edge when the cutter is inoperative. A zinc cutting-board 34, Fig. 6, may be retained on the straight edge by clips 30 held by tensioned wires 31. Lubricating pads 56 and 54 are provided for the cutter and carriage respectively.
