Arches and crowns.- Arches and crowns for furnaces are formed with the transverse rows of bricks arranged in the form of a catenary curve, while the longitudinal rows of bricks may be straight, or arranged in a catenary curve. As shown in Fig. 1, the bricks a of the arch abut at their upper ends and are spaced apart at their lower ends c to permit expansion. The bricks are of tapering form as shown in Fig. 3, 4 or 5 and the bricks of each row may be in alignment as shown in Fig. 1 or arranged to break joint.
