Fused silica; moulding by centrifugal force.- process for the preparation of hollow bodies from refractory material, such as quartz, consists in melting or sintering the material in a rotating hollow mould by a source of heat situated within the mould, the material being held in place against the wall of the mould by centrifugal force. The mould c is rotated about its longitudinal axis by means of rollers on which it is supported. A source of heat, such as an electric arc between electrodes a, b, is arranged within the mould and is movable along its longitudinal axis. Granulated or powdered material, such as broken rock crystal or sand, is charged into the mould and forms a layer d around the wall. Soon after the introduction of the arc, a tube f is formed of the fritted or molten material which remains separated from the mould by a layer of unmelted material and increases in length as the arc is moved along the axis of the mould. The wall of the mould may be formed with depressions which produce on the finished tube protuberances that can be removed and shaped into bowls of crucibles. Silica tubes, prepared by any suitable process, can be reheated in the mould and shaped into bowls &c. by centrifugal force. Oxidizing or reducing gases may be introduced into the mould if required.
