330,904. Carpmael, A., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). March 18, 1929. Sulphonic acids; ethereal sulphates. - Sulphonated products are obtained by treating higher unsaturated hydroxy fatty acids such as ricinoleic acid, or their esters such as castor oil, with gaseous sulphur trioxide while stirring and cooling. The reaction is preferably carried out in the presence of an organic diluent or solvent such as carbon tetrachloride, perchlorethane, hexachlorethane, or trichlorethylene, and the sulphur trioxide may be introduced by passing it over the solution in a current of a dry inert gas, for example, air or nitrogen. The acids or esters may if desired be first reacted upon with sufficient sulphuric acid monohydrate or chlorsulphonic acid to esterify the hydroxyl groups, and the products then further treated with gaseous sulphur trioxide as described above. Examples are given of the sulphonation of ricinoleic acid and castor oil. The Provisional Specification refers to the use of unsaturated hydroxy fatty acids and their derivatives in general as starting materials, and mentions benzene as a suitable organic diluent. Specification 296,999 is referred to.
