Abstract

330,719. Vinten, W. C., Sadler, W. J., and Vinten, Ltd., W. May 8, 1929. Collapsable spindles and rollers. -An expanding centre for a spool or bobbin comprises a number of arcs 2, Figs. 1 and 6, capable of sliding radially with respect to a central shaft 7. The arcs are mounted on radial pins 9 screwing into the shaft 7, and expanding springs 11 on the pins tend to retract them. The arcs are expanded by a cone 4 movably mounted on the shaft 7, and engaging internal conical surfaces 3 of the arcs. The cones are locked in operative position against the action of a spring 13 by balls 18 projecting through openings in a hollow extension 12 of the shaft 7. The releasing pin 14 has a recessed portion 17 into which the balls recede when the knob 20 is pushed in against the action of the spring 15, thereby releasing the cone 4 which moves to the right against the knob 20 which is held by the action of the balls 18. To re-expand the centre the cone 4 is pushed to the left and the parts then re-assume their position as shown in Fig. 6. In a modified construction the shaft 7 is uniform in diameter, the spring acting on the inner end of the cone, and locking pins are substituted for balls.
