Abstract

Walls ; cooling.- The cooling tubes or other surfaces to be protected lining the walls or forming a screen above the ash-pit of a pulverulent fuel furnace are provided with ribs, flanges or the like adapted to retain ashes or any other refractory and pulverulent material to form a protecting non-adhering layer for increasing or directing radiation. Where the fuel such as oil or gas does not provide the necessary ash, sand or ashes from another source may be used. Figs. 1 and 4 show straight and bent tubes b provided with flanges a for retaining ash &c. c. Figs. 2 and 3 show tubes embodied in a furnace wall and provided with semicircular and rectangular flanges for retaining the ash &c. Where the tubes are horizontal or slightly inclined to the horizontal, longitudinal ribs a may be provided as shown in Fig. 5. Flanges, ribs, honeycomb cells &c. may also be fitted to a water jacket or other reservoir located in a furnace.
