Abstract

329,190. K³ttner, E. W. June 6, 1929. Insulating coverings for cables.-An insulating layer of aluminium oxide is produced on the surface of articles of aluminium or its alloys by electrolytic treatment in a bath containing oxalic acid and in addition either an oxidizing compound or a strong inorganic acid. Hydrogen peroxide, potassium bichromate, chromic acid, nitric acid or hydrochloric acid ma be employed as the additional agent. Potassium iodide may be present in addition to the agents specified above. The articles may be connected as anodes with a copper cathode. Alternating current may be employed, the articles constituting both electrodes. In an example, three aluminium sheets are connected to a three-phase 120 volt supply in a bath containing 35 gms. oxalic acid, and 1 gm. potassium permanganate per litre at 25‹ C. The wire or strip coated according to the invention may be wound into a coil without further insulation and may be. heated to a red heat, the insulation being improved thereby; the coil may, however, be coated with lacquer or enamel which is hardened by the heating operation.
