Coal - cutting machines. - In a truck-mounted coalmining machine, the truck is driven by means of a vertical shaft from the motor of the machine, the shaft carrying a bevel pinion in constant mesh with two coaxial bevel pinions from either of which the motion is transmitted through a friction clutch. The vertical shaft 8, driven from the motor of the machine, drives opposed bevel gears 10, 11, the gear 10 being secured to a transverse shaft 7, and the gear 11 to a sleeve 12 and to the outer member 14 of a disc clutch 15 ; the inner member 18 of this clutch is integral with the outer member 17 of a further disc clutch 16, the inner member 24 of the latter clutch being secured to the shaft 7. The clutches are controlled by an axially-movable member 27<e> engaged by a member 27<c> provided with a pin 27b engaging an inclined way 27<a> in a nut 27 which is adjusted by a screw 25 and hand wheel 26. The clutch member 17 has teeth 19 which drive a truck axle directly or through an idler gear 20. The positions of the clutches are indicated by a bell-crank lever 28 with one arm in threaded engagement with the screw 25. A brake is provided and may comprise brake blocks 34, Fig. 3 pivoted to links 35 and forced against the truck wheels by means of a cam 37, preferably operated through worm gearing 38, Fig. 2, by a shaft 39 passing through the screw 25 and connected to a hand wheel 40.
