Abstract

328,520. Seabrook, H., (Deutsche Spiegelglas-Akt.-Ges.). Aug. 2, 1929. Production of metal.-Glass for absorbing ultra violet and infra red rays is made by adding cobalt oxide and iron oxide to a batch for producing glass which is substantially colourless, and in melting the batch under reducing conditions. The iron oxide is generally in the form of ferrosoferric oxide, and the proportion of each oxide is generally not less than 0.3 per cent of the weight of the finished glass. The absorption of the heat rays is increased by adding arsenic or antimony oxide, the proportion of each being not less than 0.5 per cent of the weight of the finished glass. For reducing purposes, carbon or other organic substances, or a small quantity of tin chloride, is added to the batch. The glass may be used in a screen for viewing incandescent bodies, and the colour of a radiant body when seen through the glass is faintly blue.
