Clutches.-A reel 7 for a fishing line or the like is rotated by means of a handle 15 a pin of which 13 presses a roller 12 between the surfaces of an extension of the reel 8 and an eccentric portion 11 of a sleeve 10. The sleeve rotates with the reel in a winding direction. A spring 22 grips at one end a pin 20 which is fixed to a radial extension 16 of the sleeve 10. 'The other end of the spring 23 acts as a stop for the roller 12. A pin 19 slides transversely in a hole in the spindle and during the winding of the line rides over three ratchet teeth formed on the inside of the sleeve 10. A sudden pull on the fishing line reverses the rotation of the reel, the ratchet grips the sleeve 10 through the pin 19, and the roller is freed from the constricted area between the reel 8 and the sleeve 11. The winding force on the handle 15 must be greater than the resistance before the line can be rewound. Gearing may be interposed between the handle and the reel. The device may be applied to the starting handles of motor cars. The device may be loaded horizontally by means of a screw thread on the spindle or a coil spring interposed between the handle and the extension on the spool.
