Compensating for wear; blocks and shoes acting on drums.-An automatically adjustable stop for limiting the motion of a movable part in one direction applicable more particularly for adjusting brakes and clutches for wear comprises in one construction, as applied to a brake, a series of balls h carried by a spring-ring i which holds them in contact with a fixed cylindrical part g while they engage also the tapered part of a thrust piece e by which the pressure of the rotary cam c is transmitted to the brake shoes a. The return movement of the shoes is thus limited by the wedging action of the balls. If due to wear, the movement of the shoes exceeds a predetermined amount, the part j of the piece c moves the ring i and the balls to a new position whereby the normal position of the shoes is kept constant. Wedges or. rollers may take the place of the balls. In order that the operating arm l of the cam mav have a constant stroke and initial position, it is coupled to the cam spindle by a one-way clutch comprising balls p disposed in tapering recesses in a part o rigid with the cam spindle and on which the boss of the lever l is mounted. A torsion spring q urges the cam to follow up the thrust pieces e. A construction is also shown in which thrust pieces and stop devices such as shown in Fig. 1 are disposed between brake shoes and a pair of operating pistons working in a common hydraulic cylinder.
