Abstract
326,341. Lansing, R. P. March 4, 1929. Vibration-dampers. - In apparatus of the oneway type for checking rebound of vehicle springs in which the frictional resistance increases with the displacement from the normal position, a series of friction discs connected alternatively to the frame and axle are pressed together by a spring and by a stationary screw actuating-member. In the construction shown, a tubular spindle or support 3 is secured to a base 1 bolted to the frame of the vehicle. An operating arm 11, the end of which is connected to the axle. is riveted to a rotatable plate 10, which is mounted on the support 3 and carries splines 14 engaging one set of friction discs 17. The inner parts of the second set of discs 18, arranged alternately with the discs 17, engage splines 19<a> carried by a pressure plate 20 connected by means of a screw to an actuator 32 carried non-rotatably on the support 3. The discs are adapted under certain circumstances to be compressed between the pressure plate 20 and the plate 21 through which the splines 19<a> pass loosely, the heads of the splines being enlarged to limit the separation of the discs. When the operating-arm 11 and plate 10 are turned in an anti-clockwise direction. the drag of the friction discs turns the plate 20 on its screw mounting until it engages a shoulder 32a on the actuator which stops its rotation and also that of the discs 18. This movement of the plate 20 acts through the discs to force the plate 21 outwardly against the pull of the centre bolt 8 and helical spring 4; the friction between the two sets of discs in this way exerts considerable resistance to the movement of the operating-arm. When the arm is rotated in a clockwise direction the pressure plate 20 is rotated on its screw mounting and moves towards the base 1. The end plate 21 then bears on the collar 36 and the pressure on the friction discs is relieved so that further movement of the arm takes place freely. The parts are completely enclosed on the outside by a light casing 15 and on the inside by a cupped washer 43 and felt ring. Specification 241,540 is referred to.
