Abstract
325,168. Goetzmann, J. April 25, 1929. Computing-apparatus.-In a computing weighing scale the weight units and price per unit weight are transformed into electrical units in such a manner that the total weight and value is proportional to the strength of the current flowing through the circuit, electrical measuring instruments being provided to indicate these quantities. As shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1, a slidable counterweight 1 movable along the arm 2 of a weighing scale carries a contact 3 movable over an electrical resistance R in circuit with a constant voltage battery 4, a rheostat 5, an ammeter 7, and voltmeter 10. If the voltmeter pointer is set to read unity or the price per units weight by adjusting the slider 6 the total, weight or value can be read on the scales 9 or 8 of the ammeter 7, the resistance chosen being so arranged as to be inversely proportional to the load. The invention is shown applied to a weighing scale in which a screwed spindle 12, Fig. 3, driven by an electric motor 13 causes the displacement of a nut 14 holding a counterweight 16 on two arms 161, 16<11> of a balance lever. The spindle 12, Fig. 4, is connected through gearing 17-19 to a shaft 20 terminating in a squared end 21 on which is mounted a cranked arm 22 carrying a pin 30 engaging a helical slot 29 in a fixed member 28. The outer end of the arm 22 carries a leaf spring 23 with a contact brush 24 co-operating with a set of insulated drums 25-27 each having a set of contact strips 32, 33 &c., 36, 37 &c., 39, 40 &c. arranged as shown in Fig. 6 with the last strip of one drum connected to the first strip of the next drum, the drums being separated by insulated discs 35, 35<1>. The strips are connected by leads arranged in a cable 43, Fig. 7, to terminals 45, 46, &c. of a resistance box 44. The brush 24 is connected to a rheostat 5 whereby the voltage in the circuit may be adjusted in accordance with the price per unit weight. The end 49 of the resistance is connected to one side of an ammeter 7 in circuit with the battery 4.
