Severing; driving devices. - In a belt-driven machine for severing by means of a thin grinding-wheel, the circumferential speed of the wheel, as this wears, is kept within predetermined limits by the provision on or near the wheel of marks indicating diameters at which the rotational speed must be increased, or by means of a feeler for testing the diameter, the movement of the feeler causing a corresponding movement of the driving bedt to increase the speed. In one constructional form, Fig. 2, the grinding-wheel 5 is mounted on a shaft 6 carrying a pulley 7 driven by a belt 8 from a pulley with three steps 2, 3, 4 and mounted on a shaft 1, the belt being tensioned by a device 9. Upon the wheel 5 are three coloured rings a, b, c, and when the diameter of the wheel is reduced to the diameters indicated by the rings, the belt 8 is moved on to the next larger pulley step; the rings may be replaced by dots &c., and may be on a bar placed at the side of the wheel. In another form, Fig. 4, the drive consists of two reversely arranged cone pulleys 12, 13 connected by a movable belt 14, and the drive to the shaft 6 of the grinding- wheel 5 is taken through a step-up belt drive 15, 16, 17, 19, 20 to a pulley 7 on the shaft 6. The diameter of the wheel 5 is tested periodically by a feeler disc 23 mounted on one end of the arm 22 of a lever pivoted at 21, a weight 24 normally lifting the feeler clear of the wheel 5. On depression of the feeler, the belt 14 is moved along the pulleys 12, 13 by a fork 30 on a bar 29, which is moved by the lever 22 through an arm 25 and a lever 27 pivoted at 26, the lower arm of the lever 27 engaging a stud 28 on the bar 29. Visual or audible signals may be given after a predetermined number of revolutions of the wheel to indicate that the diameter of the wheel 5 should be tested.
