Abstract

324,959. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Aug. 3, 1928. Plastic compositions containing natural and synthetic rubber and carbon black.-Carbon black suitable for use in the rubber industry is obtained by decomposing unsaturated hydrocarbons in the gaseous phase or gases containing substantial amount of said hydrocarbons by treatment at a decomposing temperature not over 600‹ C. and at elevated pressure with dehydrogenating catalysts comprising a metal or a compound, such as an oxide, of a metal of the iron group. In a vulcanization process, 60 parts of the carbon black obtained by the process are mixed between friction rollers with 100 parts of a plastic polymerization product obtained from butadiene by means of sodium, 15 parts of magnesium carbonate, 2 parts of sulphur, 6 parts of stearic acid, 3 parts of a resin and 1 part of mercapto-benzothiazole. and the mixture is vulcanized for 40 minutes at about 140‹ C. In another vulcanization process. 40 parts of carbon black derived from ethylene are mixed with 100 parts of a plastic polymerization product of butadiene, 25 parts of magnesium oxide, 2.5 parts of sulphur, and 0.5 parts of a vulcanization accelerator, the sheet produced being vulcanized for 15 minutes at about 140‹ C. The first Provisional Specification describes the use of the process of dehydrogenating catalysts generally, and of saturated hydrocarbons such as ethane, propane and benzine fractions as initial materials. In an example, 20 parts of the carbon obtained in the process are mixed in a roller mill with 100 parts of sodium-butadiene rubber. 15 parts of magnesium carbonate, 5 parts of sulphur, 3 parts of stearic acid and 3 parts of a resin prepared according to Specification 146,498, and the mixture is vulcanized for 40 minutes at about 140‹ C:
