Paraffin wax, purifying.-In purifying paraffin wax by treating with a solvent of the oil but not of the wax, and filtering, a continuous suction filter is used. In an example, brown coal tar oil containing 20 per cent of paraffin is cooled with stirring to 10‹ C.; the separated wax is filtered .off, stirred at -5‹ C. with 2 vols. of 0.760 benzine, filtered, washed with benzine previously cooled to -5‹ C., and treated with steam to remove residual solvent. The benzine may be replaced by acetone, or mixture of benzene with ethyl alcohol of 96 per cent strength. The filter used consists of a rotary filter drum dipping into the material, reduced pressure being maintained inside and the deposit being continually removed by scrapers.
