322,750. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Sept. 6, 1928. 1 : 5 - Di- (o - carboxyarylamino)-anthraquinones are prepared by effecting the condensation of 1: 5-dihalogen anthraquinones with aminoaryl-ocarboxylic acds or salts thereof in presence of acid binding agents and a copper compound as catalyst, in alcohols at temperatures above 150‹ C. Pressure may be used if necessary, and the process results in better yields of purer products than are otherwise obtained. The aminoaryl-o-carboxylic acids are preferably employed as salts and in quantities in excess of theroetical requirements. In examples, (1) the condensation of potassium anthranilate with the 1: 5-dichloranthraquinone is carried out in n-butyl alcohol (or ethyl alcohol) in an autoclave at 150‹ -180‹ C.; the product is condensed to the diacridone by warming with chlorsulphonic acid. (2) The condensation of the same materials is carried out in benzyl alcohol at 170‹ C. (3) The condensation of sodium 5-chloranthranilate with 1: 5-dichloranthraquinone is carried out in n-butyl alcohol at 170‹-175‹ C. in an autoclave. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 312,678.
