Branched and hinged handles.-An attachment to a spade to facilitate digging comprises two bars or members V, W connected together by a crossbar A and provided with handles K, J at their upper ends and with hinges M, 0 attached to the spade shaft B at their lower ends, and a thumb-operated spring catch C normally preventing the turning of the spade about the hinges M, 0, the arrangement being such that when the spring catch is operated by the pressure of the thumb the spade is free to turn about the hinges to deposit the soil dug by it, and when the spring catch is released by the thumb a spring returns the spade to its normal position. The thumblever H is connected to a rod E passing into a guide bracket T and surrounded by a spring D. The rod E actuates the spring catch or pawl C, which engages a clip P on the spade shaft B. A flexible member connects the rod E to a clamp on the spade shaft B to pull the latter back into position when the rod rises.
