Flexible shafts; universal joints.-In a machine for slitting a paper web, coacting shearing-discs 1, 2 are mounted on geared shafts 30, 300 driven from a pulley 7. To prevent whipping, the shafts are made in sections supported by adjustable bearings 5 and connected by flexible couplings 6. The shaft 300 is supported in the frame by screws 17. In a modification, Fig. 3, not shown, two shaft sections are joined by a flexible coupling and the shafts adjacent the couplings are supported by bearings. In a further modificition, the shaft is divided into three sections. The shafts may be connected by a coupling as shown in Fig. 6, in which internal teeth 6b, on a member 6<a> carried by a shaft 3<b>, co-operate with cantilever springs 6<c>, on a member 6<d> on a shaft 3<a>.
