Lawn-mowers. - The spindle of a removable rotary cutting-cylinder can be detachably engaged at its ends with spindles permanently mounted on the side frames. of the machine, the spindles being secured together by an axially movable catch or catches mounted within the spindle of the cutters. In the two plates a, Fig. 3, constituting the side frames of the machine is mounted a pair of coaxial short. spindles c, one of which carries a sprocket wheel e through which it is driven by chain or gear mechanism from the rear driving roller. The hollow cutter spindle, j has a channelled plate h at one end which fits on a member i on the adjacent end spindle, driving connection between the spindles being thus effected, and has in each end an axially slidable bolt or catch k pressed into axial holes in the end spindles by a helical spring l between the inner ends of the bolts. A flanged sleeve m, slidably mounted on the exterior of the spindle, is used for releasing the catches and removing the cutters. The guard plate or deflector p, Fig. 1, by which the cut grass is thrown forward into the grass box is pivotally mounted on a cross bar q and to its lower end is secured the ledger blade r which is adjustable relative to the cutters by nuts v on a screw t which is pivoted to a lug s attached to the upper end of the guard plate and which passes through an adjacent cross bar u. Leaf springs are arranged between the cross bar u and the guard plate p. The rotary blades mav be made to co-operate equally with the fixed blade along its entire length by a rotatable eccentric sleeve x, Fig. 4, which forms a bearing for one end of the cross bar q. The front ground roller y is mounted on a spindle 2 carried in a cradle 3 pivoted at. 4 and is adjusted by a nut 7 on a screw 5 engaging the roller cradle and pivoted at one end on a cross bar 6. The screw carries a spring 8 so that by adjustment of the nut 7 the height of the roller may be varied as required.
