Abstract

320,581. Abbott, A. B., and Abbott, R. Jan. 19, 1929. Dipping-rods.-The presence and quantity of water lying below the oil in an oil tank is determined by means of a dip-stick coated with a mixture of at least two ingredients one of which is impervious to or unaffected by oil but soluble in water, and the other of which is absorbent to water. The water absorbent facilitates the solution of the water soluble ingredient where it is in contact with water, so that the level is clearly shown when the stick is withdrawn. A binder is preferably added also, to retain the soaked absorbent on the rod, and a preservative to prevent access of moisture from the atmosphere. The oil-impervious, water-soluble ingredient may be treacle, heavy syrup, molasses, or honey, the water absorbent may be chalk or charcoal, the binder may be jeweller's rouge, and the preservative may be turpentine. Colouring ingredients such as sulphurated potash and tincture of ferric chloride (British Pharmacopoeia) may also be added.
