Abstract
319,843. Bateman, C. S. July 4, 1928. Tea, breaking or cutting.-Stalk is separated from tea leaf by arranging a bulk of tea with the stalk in contact with the upper surface of rollers or drums provided with longitudinal grooves, the rollers being rotated to engage the stalks and carry them away from the tea leaf, the stalks, being discharged from the grooves as they approach the lower or under surface of the drums. The machine comprises a series of rollers a with longitudinal grooves a<2> and a number of circular recesses a<1> which are chamfered at a<3>. The rollers are rotated through gearing and are separated by scrapers b which cut the leaf to the desired length as it is carried by the rollers. The leaf settles in the recesses a<1> and the stalk engages lengthwise in the grooves, the stalk and leaf being discharged into the compartments d<1>, d respectively. The rollers are arranged with their axes in an inclined plane, as shown, the space above the rollers being divided into chambers e by partitions f pivotally mounted at f<1> and having buffers f<2>. Some of the rollers may have recesses a<1> or grooves a<2> only. The tea may be supplied to the machine by a hopper provided with means for assisting in arranging the stalks to be parallel.
