Abstract

319,749. Associated Electrical Industries, Ltd., (Assignees of Slepian, J., and Mason, R. C.). Sept. 27, 1928, [Convention date]. Fusible cut-outs. - A fuse wire is enclosed in a channel of such dimensions that the voltage of the arc attains a value equal to the voltage of the circuit for a relatively low current value. Certain equations are. given in the Specification correlating the voltage per inch of arc and the current with the crosssection of a channel confining the arc. A fuse is designed from these equations that limits the current to a predetermined value when the fullcircuit voltage is applied to the ends of the arc upon the fuse being ruptured. The fuse wire 5, that may be of tungsten in preference to copper or nickel silver, lies in a channel 11 of spiral or zig-zag form cut in a block of soapstone 8. It is surrounded by a casing 2 of soapstone and connects with conducting plates 12, 13 and end caps 3, 4 having contacts 6, 7. The block 8 may be divided into two or three sections, the channel 11 being formed between them. A sudden fusion of the wire may be prevented by making a short piece of the fuse of high resistance wire and the remainder of low resistance wire.
