Calendering; wet presses and couch rolls.-In fixing a band of felt or other yielding material a on the couch rolls d of paper machines or on press rolls, burnishing and calendering rolls, impression rolls, rolls used in damping and coating operations, and on like rolls requiring resilient coatings, ribs, flutes, grooves, teeth &c. e are provided in the peripheral surfaces of the rolls, and corresponding depressions or projections c are provided in the band of material, the spacing of these latter being made smaller to allow the tensioning and stretching of the band by means of the thread b during winding. The depressions or projections in the band may be dispensed with, the band being secured on the teeth, spikes, or the like e. Fig. 4, by the tension of the band or of the thread b.
