Abstract

318,276. Kosken, W. A., and Inslee, J. A. May 31, 1928. Kinematograph apparatus.-In continuous feed apparatus for use with a film having the standard image arrangement, two series of reflectors moving in non-circular paths are provided between the film and lens for optical compensation, and are co-ordinated so as to maintain constant the length of the light path between the film and the lens. The reflectors may be carried by two endless planes and move in a plane containing the medial line of the film and the axis of the lens, the paths a b of the reflectors 87, 96 being, as indicated in Fig 14, rectilinear at their operative part. The angle of incidence of the light beam on the reflectors 87 may be twice that on the reflectors 96, and the speeds of the film x and the reflectors 87, 96 may be in the ratio 1:1<1>/3 : 1<2>/3. The apparatus may be constructed as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and comprise a gate 12, feed sprocket 15, light tube 14, and lens 6. The sprocket 15 may have teeth on one flange only, and its shaft 16, which is mounted in anti-friction bearings 20 and rotated through a gear 24, may carry a brake drum 26. The drum 26 controls a pivoted cutoff shutter 28 through a brake shoe 38 engaged by a spring 36 secured to a rack bar 31 meshing with a pinion 30 on the spindle of the shutter 28, the bar 31 being pivoted to a lever 34 pivoted at 33 and pressed by a spring 39. Idler rollers 17 carried by a bracket 18 rotatable about the shaft 16 permit adjustment of the centering of the film in the gate, and a roller 41 carried by a link 43 pivoted on the spindle of a roller 40 falls against a roller 9 to serve as a fire trap if the film x should break. The reflectors 96 are carried by separate but contiguous members 82 which travel between guides 80<1>, 81<1>, being moved by toothed driving discs 62, 63. 64 engaging rollers 83 within the members. The spindle 47 carrying the disc 64 is mounted in a journal box 58 which is adjustable to and from the spindle 46 carrying the discs 62, 63 by means of tapered screws 60, 61. The reflectors 87 are similarly carried and moved, and motion is transmitted to them and to the sprocket 15 from the spindle 46 by a gear train 51, 71. 24. The spindle 46 carries a flywheel 50 which may have a toothed or friction surface; the spindle may be driven by hand or by a motor 112 through friction wheels 113, 114, 116, a hemi-spherical shell 123, and the flywheel 50. The position of the shell 123 may be adjusted by means of a handle 133, downward movement of the handle causing the shell to engage both the wheel 50 and the wheel 116, upward movement 'of it causing disengagement and interruption of the drive, and horizontal movement of it causing the gear ratio to be varied. The shell rotates on a spindle 122, Fig. 1A, fixed to a spindle 119 having its axis in the intersection of the planes 117, 118 of the wheels 116 and 50. A lever 128 embraces the spindle 122 and is connected at its lower end by toggle links 130, 131, 132 to one end of the lever 133. Downward movement of the handle causes the lever 128 to force the shell along its spindle against the action of a spring 124 and disengage the shell from the wheels 50, 116. The reflectors may be adjustably carried on brackets secured to the members 82. As shown in Figs. 8 and 10, each mirror 96 is secured to a backing member 97 having a post 98 extending through the bracket 95 and carrying a spring 101 and adjusting nut 100. A pin 102 and ball 103 secured to the bracket 95 engage sockets in the backing: 97 and permit it to be rocked by the adjustment of screws 106 having tapered heads. The apparatus may be used with a film having only one perforated margin, the other margin being removed.
