Abstract

317,416. Mond, A. L., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). May 14, 1928. Electrode furnaces.- To avoid segregation, the charge is supplied in a continuous stream, without coming into contact with the furnace walls, over adjustable guide surfaces which are arranged above the melting or reaction zone, and sloping in a direction towards the electrodes. The. surfaces mav be of cooled or uncooled, sheet metal or refractory brick, and, when in contact with the feed pipe 2, may have a triangular form 4<a>, Fig. 2, or, when a free outlet is provided for the charge from the pipes 2, the guides may be rectangular as shown at 4b, Fig. 2. With one electrode, the surface may consist of a closed truncated cone. Three partly open truncated cones interconnected at their points of intersection may be triangularly disposed in relation to three electrodes. To prevent premature lateral overflow, the surfaces may be concave or provided with a rim. Fig. 3 shows a three phase alternating current furnace in which part of the charge may be supplied through a central pipe 5, the guide surfaces for this pipe being dispensed with.
