Abstract

Air and gases, controlling direction of flow of. -In apparatus for drying sheet material such as wall-board, in which the sheets pass progressively through a chamber, the drying air in each of a number of zones is injected into the chamber in a direction parallel to the path of the sheets. As shown in plan view in Fig. 1, the drying chamber 10 has two circuits maintained by two pairs of fans 27 which force the air through conduits 34, heaters 33, and into the centre of the chamber through manifolds 36, the air being withdrawn at the ends of the chamber through manifolds 43. The chamber is thus under a slight vacuum. Moisture is withdrawn through damper-controlled pipes 50, and fresh air is obtained by leakage through the chamber walls. In a modification one inlet 36 is situated at the dry end of the chamber, and the other in the middle, and in a further modification both inlets are situated at the ends and the outlets in the middle. The air passes from the inlet manifolds to perforated pipes 39, Fig. 5 extending across the chamber. The outlet manifolds 43 are divided into equal passages by baffles 46, Fig. 6. The sheets are conveyed by rollers 11 spaced in pairs along the length of the chamber, and journaled in a frame 12 mounted on rollers 20 to allow for expansion. The upper roller of each pair is mounted so as to allow for vertical movement. Heating coils 41 are situated beneath the rollers. The roof of the chamber comprises a corrugated sheet 17, layers of insulating material 18 and a cover plate 19.
