Joint-making packing.-In a joint between a pipe 3 and an external collar or sleeve 4 wherein fluid-tightness is secured by a rubber &c. ring 6 which is rolled and squeezed into position between the two parts, the packing ring 6 is positioned by means such as a sheet 13 of cloth wrapped about the ring. Where a second pipe. 2 is to be jointed to the pipe 3 by means of a collar 4, Fig. 11, the ring 6 and cloth 13 are inserted between the ends of the pipes and the collar 4 is moved to the right until a tapered recess 11 therein is disposed around the packing ring. The ring is then forced into the recess 11 by pulling the end 13<a> of the enclosing cloth, Fig. III, and by further pulling the packing ring is rolled, and radially compressed, into the smaller end of the recess 11, Fig. I. The pipe 2 may be jointed to the collar 4 in known manner by a packing ring 5 which is initially housed in a recess 7 in the collar and is rolled into a reduced extension 9 thereof by the axial movement of the collar referred to. In a modification, Fig. VIII, the doubled sheet of cloth is replaced by a sheet of thin metal 14 which is wrapped around the pipe to form a cylinder and is provided with manipulating ears 15. Additional sealing may be effected by bitumen 17 forced into the collar cavity between the rings 5, 6, Fig. V.
