Abstract

313,033. Hume Pipe Co. (South Africa), Ltd. June 5, 1928, [Convention date]. Butt joints; overlap joints with packing compressed radially on assembly. - The adjacent ends of two pipes 2, 2<a>, Fig. II, are connected together by means of flanges 3, 3<a>, each of which is secured on one of the pipe ends in a fluidtight manner by means of a packing ring 5 which is rolled into a recess 6 of the flange, and laterally compressed therein, by relative longitudinal movement of the pipe and flange. A gasket 10 is interposed between the two flanges, which are preferably drawn together by bolts 11. The inner end 4 of the recess 6 is tapered to facilitate entry of the packing ring, while the outer end is closed by a lip 7 to prevent the ring from being forced out by the internal pressure. In a modified flange, Fig. III, the inner end 4 of the recess 6 also forms a recess to accommodate the packing ring prior to assembly.
