Abstract

312,937. Jackson, L. Mellersh-, (Burgess Laboratories, Inc.). June 2, 1928, [Convention date]. Sound of discharge, modifying.-A silencer, applicable to firearms comprises a substantially straight and unobstructed duct with a lining of porous gas-pressure and sound-absorbing material, which occupies from 1 to 20 per cent of the space in which it is packed. In the case of engines, the material should be non-inflammable and may consist of mineral fibre, metallic shavings, mica, slagwool, pumice and the like. A sheet-metal cylinder 1, Fig. 1, has end cover plates 5, 6 to which are secured respectively an inlet pipe 7 and outlet pipe 9 for the medium to be silenced. Coaxially arranged in the cylinder is a foraminous tubular member 3, e.g. of perforated sheet metal, the perforations in which occupy from 1 to 35 per cent of the surface of the metal, and this provides a straight unobstructed duct 4 for the gases. The annular space 2 between the member 3 and cylinder 1 is packed with the sound-absorbing material. In a modification, the member 1 is of conical form. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the outer casing 10 is in two parts, one forming an expansion chamber 12, the other being formed as described in connection with Fig. 1. The gases may enter tangentially at 11 or axially at 11<1>. In the form shown in Fig. 6, the sound-absorbing material is enclosed in a perforated shell 22 supported by three ribs within the casing 17. In a further construction, the perforated member 3, Fig. 1, is of conical form, the smaller diameter being at the outlet end of the casing which is cylindrical. In a still further modification, Fig. 9 (not shown), the features of Figs. 1 and 6 are combined. In the form shown in Fig. 10, the casing 40 is of rectangular cross-section, has end covers 41, 42, and encloses parallel, spaced perforated metal shells 45 filled with the looselypacked sound-absorbing material. Specification 4843/87, [Class 7, Air and Gas engines], is referred to.
