312,600. Electro Bleach & By-Products, Ltd., Hollins, J., and Jepson, D. Feb. 25, 1928. Divided on 312,395. Metals, depositing ; electrodes ; diaphragms; electrolytes, circulating, agitating, purifying, and heating. - Air under pressure is injected into the electrolyte at the base of the anode compartment containing soluble scrap material in order to prevent arching a bridging of the anode material by sludge and to facilitate removal of the sludge. In the apparatus shown the scrap material n is contained within an annular compartment between the outer wall of the cell and a diaphragm d, within which is mounted a rotary cathode mandrel, not shown. The scrap material n is supported on a number of glass balls o which are themselves supported on a grid p. Air under pressure enters through apertures r from an annular space q and passes upwards through the anode material. Electrolyte is supplied to the bottom of the cathode compartment, passes over the notched upper end of the diaphragm, and downwardly through the anode compartment carrying away sludge dislodged by the compressed air to the outlet s. The sludge is settled in a trap and the electrolyte filtered and passed through a thermostatically controlled heater before return to the cell. Modified forms of the grid pare described.
