S e w i n g - machines ; feed, by devices engaging upper surface of work.-In a machine of the kind described in Specification 199,740 having a lower fourmotion feed dog and an upper feed roll, an adjustable stop is provided to prevent the upper feed roll from impact on the throat plate when the fabric is in the machine. The feed roll 160 is mounted on a fork 166 carried by a bar 165 parallel with the presser-bar 140. The upper part of the bar 165 is hollow, Fig. 2, and the top part engages the head of a bolt 201 screwing into a block 202 secured to the frame 35 by a grub screw. By loosing the lock nut 204 and turning the bolt with a screwdriver, the descent of the feed roll can be adjusted for various thicknesses of work and to prevent its teeth hammering on the throat-plate 45 when chaining off. The usual four-motion feed dog 95 is provided to act in conjunction with the feed roll 160 and lifts the presser-foot and feed roll slightly on its upward movement as is usual. The feed roll is driven by the gear 162, which engages its feed teeth 161. The gear 162 is fixed to a spindle 170 carrying a pinion 174 with long teeth meshing with the pinion 186 which is driven through other gears from the main shaft which carries a worm so cut that the rotation of the feed roll is intermittent. The elongated teeth of the pinion 174 enable the feed roll to be lifted with the presser-foot without disconnecting the driving mechanism. Passer-bars.-The presser-bar 140 carries a bifurcated member 145 with legs 147, 148 having bosses 149 on which pivot the presser-foot 150, Fig. 4. The presser-foot is lifted by an arm 121 on a sleeve 115 carrying an arm 117 engaged by foot or hand operating means. The sleeve 115 also carries an arm 196, Fig. 2, which engages under a stud 270 on the feed-roll bar, to lift the feed-roll simultaneously with the presser-foot, against the spring 168.
