Abstract
311,253. United Water Softeners, Ltd., and Higgins, E. B. Feb. 6, 1928. Chloramines and hydrogen, obtaining; electrolytes, circulating; liquids, treating; electrodes.-A sterilizing and germicidal agent consisting of mono-chloramine or dichloramine or both together with a relatively small proportion of free chlorine, is obtained by electrolysis of a solution of an alkali metal chloride in the presence of ammonia or a soluble ammonia salt. The process may be carried out in an earthenware or glass cell comprising an upstanding internal tube y enclosing metal gauze electrodes n<1>, n<2> of large area relatively close together. The tube y communicates at the bottom by an aperture y<1> with the outer space into which ammonium chloride crystals are introduced through a mouth normally closed by a stopper l<1>. The vessel is filled with electrolyte to the top of the tube y. Chloramine is liberated at the anode and hydrogen at the cathode; these are carried off through the outlet z<2> by a current of air introduced by a tube z<1>. Alternatively the cathode may be enclosed in a porous pot and the hydrogen withdrawn separately. When the high current densities are used, the cell may be cooled by immersion in water. Ammonium alum or di-ammonium hydrogen phosphate may be used as the ammonium salt. Alternatively the electrodes may be immersed in a solution of the ammonium salt with the alkali metal chloride between, or a solution of ammonia may be allowed to drip on the electrodes or gaseous ammonia may be mixed with the alkali metal chloride solution. The chloramines may be stored in a vessel protected from heat and bright sunshine. The process may also be carried out and applied to the sterilization of a water supply in the apparatus described in Specifications 22280/12; 253,623, [Class 1 (ii), Inorganic compounds, other than &c.], and 311,218, also are referred to.
