Abstract
311,210. Fitzpatrick, H. D., (Maatschappij tot Vervaardiging van Snijmachines Volgens van Berkel's Patent en van Andere Werktuigen). Feb. 7, 1928. Cutting slices in succession. - A slicing machine in which the carriage is guided and supported by vertical or inclined rollers, is characterized by the rollers being constructed and arranged to prevent vertical and horizontal play of the carriage during its reciprocations. Some of the rollers are self-adjustable to take up wear and prevent play. As shown in Figs. 1, 2, the carriage 1 is provided at one side with three rollers 5 - - 7, the rollers 5, 7 being wedge-shaped to engage a correspondingly shaped guide whereby side play is prevented, and the adjustable roller 6, mounted on a spring 9, is pressed against a flat upper guide which, together with the grooved guide, forms a hollow bar 10 enclosing the rollers 5 7. At the other side, the carriage is supported by a roller, or rollers, 15 moving in a hollow guide bar 16, or a group of rollers similar to the rollers 5 - - 7 may be used. In a modification, the rollers are journaled on ball bearings, and the adjustable roller is carried on a lever, fulcrummed on the carriage, the roller being midway between the fulcrum and a coil spring which presses the lever upwards. The force of the spring is thus magnified by the lever. A grooved guide rail is fitted to the bottom, and a flat rail is fitted to the top of the hollow guide bar. In other modifications, the rollers 5 - - 7 have rounded rims which run in correspondingly shaped grooves in the hollow guide bar, or the bottom guide surface and the side web of the hollow guide bar are formed integrally with the under tables, the top guide strip being screwed to the side web. In the modification shown in Fig. 7, oblique rollers 41, 42 run on the sloping faces of a guide rail 44, and the adjustable roller 43 is either pressed up directly by leaf springs 45 or by levers which magnify the spring action. This construction may be modified by making the guide rail 44 of square action and arranging it with a diagonal vertical. The adjustable roller 45 is then made with a V- groove in its rim to engage the lower corner of the guide rail. A round guide rail may alternatively be used, the rollers then having arcuate grooves in their rims to fit the rail.
