Abstract

309,966. Croad, A. K., (Hanovia Chemical & Manufacturing Co.). Dec. 14, 1927. Coating.-In a process for producing a crystalline cuprous oxide coating on a copper surface by subjecting cleaned and polished copper within a sealed furnace to a gaseous medium which includes oxygen and whose temperature is raised, and maintained within 58‹ C. of the melting point of copper, the partial pressure of the oxygen is maintained, during the rise in temperature, sufficiently low, below 15 mm. of mercury, and is then raised to a predetermined amount, not exceeding 200 mm. of mercury, and for a predetermined time from 5 to 15 minutes, to effect the formation of a cuprous oxide coating. The pressure is then lowered to a low value, below 15 mm. of mercury, during the cooling stage to prevent further oxidation of the copper, by flushing out the furnace with an inert gas or gases such as nitrogen, argon, neon or helium.
