Pistons, cooling. - To decrease the expansion of a piston of aluminium &c., the heat from the piston-head is in part conducted to the gudgeon-pin bosses and in part radiated to the interior by a coating or lining of copper or other metal. A copper tube a may be embedded in the piston during casting, apertures e being afterwards cut through the wall a<2> and through the tube, between the gudgeon-pin bosses, to permit the circulation of air and oil from the interior of the piston. The walls a<1> are thickened in the neighbourhood of the gudgeon-pin bosses c to promote the flow of heat to the bosses, while the walls h, f are made thinner than the crown b to obstruct the flow of heat to the skirt. i.
