Abstract

309,394. General Electric Co., Ltd., Singleton, W., and Marris, G. C. Jan. 9, 1928. Electromagnets.-Cores for electromagnets &c. comprise powdered or laminated magnetic material coated with silicon or with a substance containing silicon by treating it in a heated condition with silicon tetrachloride. The coating may be or contain an alloy of silicon. Iron or iron-alloy powder or laminations may be heated to dull red heat in a current of nitrogen or other inert gas mixed with silicon tetrachloride vapour. The coated material may be annealed in hydrogen or other non-oxidizing gas before consolidation to form a core. Powdered material may be pressed to the required shape and density with or without a binder. In treating nickel-iron containing 80 per cent of nickel and developing high permeability when annealed at 600‹ C., the silicon-coated powder is not annealed in hydrogen, this annealing being omitted or carried out in inert gas, and is further coated before consolidation with insulation withstanding the temperature at which the consolidated core is annealed.
