Abstract

309,231. Cranston, W. M. Aug. 13, 1928. Coking processes.-Coal is distilled at low temperature in two steps by being first ground and mixed with a mineral oil and heated to about 180‹ C. in one retort, the distillation products being collected, the second step consisting in cracking the oil contained in the residue in a second retort, which is heated to between 300‹ and 500‹ C. The pressure in the first retort is maintained at two inches below atmospheric and in the second retort at about 20 lbs. or more above atmospheric. Water or superheated steam is introduced into the second retort to effect hydrogenation of the unsaturated hydrocarbons and to reduce the temperature at which distillation and cracking takes place. If a horizontal retort is used nickel or iron stirrers or a trough made of these metals may be employed to promote catalytic action.
