Abstract

308,625. Berry, A. F. Sept. 22, 1927. Electric radiators. - Apparatus for diffusing heat comprises one or more elongated incandescent electric lamps 2 having one or more long filaments run at a high state of incandescence so that they will radiate heat uniformly along their length, surrounded or partly surrounded by a number of reflecting, deflecting, or diffusing members 1 arranged louvre-wise so that the lamps are not visible, or readily visible, from ordinary points of view. The lamps 2 may be made of clear, frosted, or ground glass, or of quartz. The reflecting members may be of truncated pyramidal, conical, inverted bowl or equivalent shape, extending some distance into one another with their concave sides facing the lamp socket 2a, and they may be made of the material known under the Registered Trade Mark " Bakedite," or of sheet metal or other opaque material which may be coated with a coloured material, or of frosted or opal glass, silica, stiffened paper, or other translucent material which may be coloured. They may comprise two or more similarly shaped pieces 1, 1a, Fig. 10, of clear or coloured glass spaced a short distance apart to admit light between them, or to contain an interposed layer 1<b> of fabric, paper, paint, metal foil, gauze, or other material. The members I may be spaced apart by means of sleeves 3a and may be clamped in position by means of nuts 3b on the ends of metal rods 3 which pass through inwardly extending 1<x> on the members 1, the sleeves 3a, and a flanged portion 4a of a lower end member 4. The apparatus may be supported in an upright position by means of a base 5, or it may be suspended in an inverted position by means of a chain. The end of the lamp 2 is engaged by spring fingers 2b and the pipe 2c may be received by a hole 7<a> in a stem 7 extending downwardly from an upper end member 6. The stem also carries a dish-shaped reflector 8 and supporting legs 9. The rods 3 may be replaced by bars 16, Fig. 10, formed with spaced lateral recesses 16x to receive the flanges 1<x>, two of the bars being fixed and a third rotatable about a vertical axis. When the members 1 only partly surround the lamp, the apparatus may be supported against, or near to, a wall or pillar by means of an eye 17, Fig. 7.
