Surface areas, computing.-In a Sawyer type of machine the measuring wheel is prevented from rotating before and after the hide reaches and leaves the point of approach of the wheel to the supporting roll, the measuring wheel being held out of contact with the hide and braked during such times. The measuring wheel is mounted on a lever 18 pivoted at 20 and supported adjustably by a counterweighted lever 28. Pivoted on the lever 18 at 44, 58 and pin-andslot connected thereto at 46, 56 are levers 42, 52 carrying rollers 40, 50 protruding slightly beyond the periphery of the measuring wheel. As the work enters it first engages and raises the roller 40 and thereby through the pin and slot 46 elevates the measuring wheel to an extent commensurate with the thickness of the work. The measuring wheel consequently does not begin to rotate until the leading edge reaches the lowest point of the wheel. Similarly as tne rear edge of the work leaves this point the roller 50 takes over the function of supporting the measuring wheel which therefore ceases to be driven. In order to render the control of the wheel more effective a brake 64 pivoted on the lever 18 at 66 and normally resting against an adjusting screw 76 is operative prior to entry and after departure of the work. Before the lifting of the measuring wheel by the work the weight of the wheel and its supporting lever presses the wheel against the brake. As the work is leaving. the roller 40 drops off the rear edge and thus through a contact screw 70 urges the brake against the wheel.
