Packeting cigarettes.-In shaping, filling, and closing slide and shell boxes, cigarettes are placed on a blank s simultaneously with the raising of the side walls w thereof, the folding of the slide is then completed and the completed slide is fed down an inclined track so that the projecting front edge of the slide enters a shell held open by a former which previously erected it as it was fed forward in the longitudinal direction of the slide. Cigarettes Z<1>, Fig. 2, from a container 1 are fed on to a plate. 8 disposed above a conveyer 7 which receives a layer of cigarettes Z' from a container 2. A finger 9 sweeps the upper layer of cigarettes on to the lower ones to permit the conveyer 7 to feed both layers on to a blank s disposed beneath a bridge 12, Fig. 3. The blanks s are fed singly from a pile 13 by a cam operated pusher 14 and rest against a stop 19<b> on a pusher 19. The pusher 19 is raised to fold up the side flaps w, Fig. 11<a>, of the blank, the bridge 12 being simultaneously raised. Projections 21 on a conveyer 18, carry the slide past folders 23, 24 which turn up the end flap and bend over the tongue 2, whereupon a conveyer 26 moving at right angles to the conveyer 18 moves the slide through a channel 28 thereby completing the folding of the slide. The channel 28, Fig. 7, leads to an inclined track 30 down which the slide is guided by the lower stretch of an upper conveyer band 31 until its rests upon a pivoted table or part 42 of the track 30. In the meantime, a collapsed shell h, fed from a pile 32 by a conveyer 34, is opened out by a knife edged former 35 restrained from movement with the shelf by one or more of a series of spring pressed pins 38 which engage recesses 37 in the former. As the shell progresses along the former, the pins are removed from its path and later returned to hold the former. The former holds one end of the erected shell whilst the projecting front edge of the slide enters the other end; the table 42 is lowered to bring the slide into line with the shell and the conveyer 34 pushes the shell over the slide. A pusher 46 depending from a chain 47 passes the completed box on to a delivery conveyer 48.
