Abstract

307,154. Spencer, Moulton, & Co., Ltd., G., and Spencer, A. Jan. 10, 1928. Axle-trucks and bogies; springs, arrangement of.-In a bogie for a railway vehicle the bolster that supports the vehicle is directly carried at each end on one or more pneumatic cushions or on one or more clusters of pneumatic cushions. The bolster 1, Fig. 1, is suspended at each end from a spring plank 9 by inflatable bags 5 housed between dished, circular plates 2, 2a attached to the bolster and spring plank respectively. The edges of the plates 2, 2a are flanged to receive the beaded edge of an annular member 4, the outer surface of which is bounded by a ring 8 retained on the member 4 by ridges 4<a>. The ring 8, in a modification, may be part circular in section and built up in sections. A rubber block 7, attached to a plate 15, may be bolted to the plate 2<a> to provide a seating when the bag 5 is deflated or to absorb excessive shocks. Springs may replace the blocks 7. The bag 5 is provided with a pump nipple 16 and as shown is continuous, passing over the block 7. In a modification the bag may be made with a circular hole of the size of the block 7, the edges of the hole being secured to the edges of the block 7. The plates 2, 2a may be mounted on the bolster beam and spring pla.nk 9 by means of pivots 19, 19<a>, Fig. 5, or by means of knife edge pivots 26, 27 and 23, 24 respectively, Fig. 6, rubber blocks 22, in these examples, are attached to both upper and lower plates 2, 2<a> and projections 29, Fig. 6, are formed on the bag for centralizing purposes. In order to prevent relative lateral movement between the bolster beam and spring plank they may be connected by pivoted rods 30, Fig. 1, which may be either rigid or flexible. In an alternative arrangement the bolster and spring plank may be rockably connected by a part cylindrical member 35, Fig. 9, engaging between two brackets 33 fixed to the spring plank by bolts through the intermediary of a rubber block 36 and plate 37. The bearing surface on the member 35 may be faced with rubber.
