Abstract

306,599. Marks, E. C. R., (Cameron Machine Co.). Nov. 25, 1927. Winding webs.-In winding-machines of the kind comprising two spaced drums rotating in the same direction and engaging the web roll, the web roll is prevented from bouncing or riding out of the machine by (1) so arranging the drums that the crest of the drum towards which moves the top of the web roll is higher than the, crest of the other drum, and (2) guiding the winding shaft in a line approaching the vertical centre-line of the lower drum. In the machine shown in Fig. 5, the web 18 is wound on the winding- shaft 3 by means of drums 1, 2, the drum 1 towards which moves the top of the web roll being higher than the drum 2. The winding-shaft and a riding roller 4 move on inclined guides 22. The riding roller is geared to a bevelwheel sliding on a shaft geared to the shaft of the drum 2. The web passes over guide-rollers 19, 20, 21, between a roller 5 and slitting-rollers 6, round the drum 1, and over the drum 2. The drums 1, 2 and roller 5 are geared together by a chain, the drum 2 being preferably driven at a higher speed than the drum 1. To prevent the riding roller from tending to push the web roll out of the machine, the guides of the winding roller may be so arranged that the riding roller moves away from the plane of travel of the winding-shaft. For this purpose, the riding roller and winding-shaft may be provided with inclined and vertical guides respectively. The drums of a standard machine may be arranged at different level as set out above by tilting the machine bodily, for instance by means of wedges placed under the front of the machine. In the machine shown in Fig. 13, a tiltable support 51 mounted coaxially with the drum 2 supports the drum 1 and has guides 53 for the winding-shaft 3. The support is tilted by means of worms 58 which engages sectors 57 on the support and are geared to a hand-wheel 62. The worm-gearing may be replaced by an eccentric engaging an opening in the support. A riding roller 4 is mounted on vertical guides 56.
