Abstract
306,521. Pupin, M. I. Feb. 24, 1928, [Convention date]. Artificial lines; duplex telegraphs.-Comprises an artificial line AL, Fig. 4, particularly for use with high-speed cable signals for which the inductance of the cable has an appreciable effect. The line is made up of sections comprising shunt .condensers 24, series inductances 11, and further series inductances 12 shunted by resistances 19. The Specification contains a mathematical discussion showing how the magnitudes of the impedances 11, 12, 19, 24 can be calculated so that the artificial line may simulate, throughout a given range of frequencies, the impedance of a cable 10; the experimental data required are the terminal resistance and reactance of a length of cable at two typical frequencies, and its capacity per unit length. Disturbances due to reflection of low-frequency signal components at the end of the cable are neutralized by termination of the artificial line AL in a variable condenser 29 and resistance 30. Sea earths 9, 8 are provided for the artificial line AL and transmitter 1, the sea earth 9 being balanced by means of an impedance 5 consisting of two inductances, one of which is shunted by resistance. The sections of the artificial line may be all equal or may be graded in groups representing different lengths of cable. It is stated that the invention makes possible such a high signal speed that valve amplifiers can be advantageously used on the receiver.
