Abstract

306,291. Reed, F., W., and Craven Bros. (Manchester), Ltd. March 1, 1928. Lathes ; chucks.-In machines for ending and centring axles for railway and like wheels, the axle a is gripped at each end by a chuck e rotatable by means of a gear g in a headstock f. Three radial jaws b in each chuck are attached to blocks c slidable radially by means of wedges h moved axially by a yoke i and two pneumatic plungers j, k, mounted at diametrically opposite parts of the headstock. The wedges have surfaces n, of different inclination, the latter giving a powerful closing action, which engage pivoted pads o in the blocks c, and the blocks are moved outwards by springs d. The pneumatic cylinders are arranged so that they exert their greatest pressure in the direction causing opening of the chuck in order to make this action certain. The inclination of the surfaces n<1> of the wedges is such that the wedges are self-retaining in their gripping position, but they are further secured by spring plungers p arranged at right angles to the line of movement of the blocks c and engaging surfaces on the wedges inclined oppositely to the surfaces n, n<1>.
