Abstract

305,139. Poulverel, A. Jan. 31, 1928, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Metals, depositing; electrodes; diaphragms.- An anode for use in the deposition of metals comprises hollow bars a mounted between a pair of hollow curved arms 2, Fig. 4, connected by hollow arms 7 to trunnions 8 by which a heating fluid is supplied and withdrawn. The trunnions are oscillated through gearing by pulleys 10. The articles to be plated are suspended within the anode frame from an overhead bar to which an oscillatory movement of variable frequency and amplitude may be imparted. Noxious fumes are removed from above the bath by tubes 3 connected to an exhaust pipe provided with a suction fan and a trap for condensed fumes. In a modification the anode is heated but stationary. In another modification, Fig. 7, the anode comprises hollow vertical rods 2 mounted on a rotating hollow cvlindrical frame on which soluble anodes 2<1> are also mounted. The cathode 5 is rotated in the opposite direction by means of a crossed belt 6. The anode and cathode may be separated by a permeable or semi-permeable or osmotic or semi-osmotic diaphragm. An insulating screen having apertures arranged to produce a varying deposit at different points of the cathode may also be provided, and may be combined with a dia. phragm. The invention is applicable to the depostition of silver from a silver cyanide solution and chromium from a bath of chromic acid, and also to the deposition of nickel; soluble anodes may be employed in each case.
