Abstract

304,659. Bakelite Corporation, (Assignees of Bender, H. L.). Nov. 11, 1926, [Convention date]. Divided on 280,521. Condensation products of phenols with formaldehyde and aniline or its homologues.-Resinous products are obtained by condensing a phenol with formaldehyde and aniline (or a homologue) in the presence of a basic catalyst, and expelling aniline from the condensation 'product; the aniline is preferably expelled by distillation under reduced pressure. According to the conditions, the products may be potentially reactive, i.e. convertible by heat into infusible and insoluble bodies, or they may be slowly reactive or non- reactive products convertible by addition of a methylene-containing hardening agent into potentially reactive products. In an example, phenol (5.3 mols.), aniline (2.7 mols), formaldehyde (10 mols.) and a little hexamethylenetetramine are heated together first under reflux and then so as to allow water and part of the aniline to escape; instead of hexamethylenetetramine other basic substances, such as sodium carbonate or calcium hydroxide, may be used. A filling material may be added prior to the expulsion of the aniline, and the expelled aniline may be re-used. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes the manufacture of like products by condensing a phenol with formaldehyde and aniline (or a homologue) substantially in the molecular proportions 2, more than 2, and 1 respectively, and expelling aniline from the condensation product. Reference is made also to the manufacture of a resin by the reaction of phenol with anhydroformaldehyde aniline and hexamethylenetetramine. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
