Abstract

304,463. Nichols, H. J. Jan. 13, 1928. Projectiles.-An armour-piercing projectile is provided with a specially constructed base plug for sealing the explosive chamber, whereby the the projectile is capable of withstanding the stresses due to an oblique impact in such a manner that tearing away the base of the shell is prevented. This object is attained by so constructing the plug that it is able to yield laterally, whilst its shape is such that explosion of the change expands it so that the plug is not blown out backwards, thus ensuring complete breaking up of the walls of the shell. As shown, the chamber 10 containing the bursting-charge is sealed by a screwed plug 11 having an external central cavity 16 of sufficient depth to render the plug elastic. The cavity may be closed by a plate 17, Fig. 2, and may be filled with a yielding material such as a sand or aluminium. Internally, the plug is preferably hollowed out near the periphery, at 23, forming a lip which expands and seals the base effectively when the charge is exploded by the fuze 15.
